I completely agree.  The brush studio seems flawed in its implementation -- at least to Procreate where you can much more easily see what brush you are using.
As noted when using Brush Studio
    1. Select Brush -- it is highlighted
    2. Change any setting such size -- it is no longer highlighted
    3. Return settings to original -- still does not highlight
    4. Brush Name Not Shown -- it also hard to know since you cannot remember a name, unless, as noted, you go and fuss with the advanced dialogs for the brush.  Hovering will show the name, but as I am using a Wacom Cintiq this is agonizing hard to do.
I find this exceedingly frustrating as I am doing digital art.  Makes me want to look at other programs to see if they are better suited to digital art workflows.  My hope with Affinity is a single product between macOS and iOS ... but even something as "trivial" as this is a huge amount of friction to me -- especially as is only one of 3 studios I really care about:  1) brushes, 2) layers, 3) colors.

Alice S reacted to Polygonius in Brushes (organize, find, get access...)
The WHOLE brush-concept is suboptimal. The functionality is almost great, but all aspects of access and the handling is... could be much more better

    1. View of brushes
With hundreds of brushes in dozens of categories... you will become some problems to find which you want. The only possible preview-view is this stroke-view. This view is complete useless if you search for eg. a texture, or if the size is set to a small or extra-big value... There is absolute no option to show/order the brush just as big quader-view, showing the "texture", sort by size, sort by name.. BTW: when doing any other action, and going back to brush-panel... the highlight is disappeared, so what brush im currently use???
    2. Fast access to standard or similar brushes overall
However in which category i am, which tool i use...  There a lot of situations i need a standard-brush during the situation i use other ones. Same by changing the tool. Its nice that last brsuh for this tool is remembered... in maybe 60% thats a good choice.  But as said often i need a standard-one. The way to panal-brush, hamburger to simple, choose one is very very long windowed, the way back is even more complicated, if do not remember, which category, which item...
The solution: Right-click: Besides other context-options, each brush-like-tool offers a right-context and here are in the first divide-area some entries like this "use standard 1,2,3..."  (i have defined 5 standard brushes); "go to favorite" (here i have maybe 7 favorite brushes... in maybe different categorys, the brsuh-panel will automatically react to this); and "go back"...here are my last 5 brushes (except the standard ones).
Another right-menu- (better context-bar) should be: "Use current size" and "do not use tool"  Each brush has its own size, and some ones special tools. This is often a big advantage, but often not. If i just searching for TEMPORALLY POSSIBLE brush... i almost want the candidates in a equal chosen size, with same opacity... and of course i do not want wet edges or another tool, when just searhing for this job. This checkboxes, will narcotic the special UNIQUE brush-settings and call them in the most familiar way as the current one. This is only valid as long the check is active!
    3. Edit a brush TEMPORALLY or as automic "OVER-WRITTEN"
There is absolutely no way to temporally change a brush, when using the brush panel. ALL settings there will immediately "stored" without asking. But in 90% i just want this changes just temporally...  There should be a "Save/Overwrite" button, if i want this changes PERMANENTLY,  otherwise all done settings are just temporally, just for this current job and only valid as soon i change to another brush! If i want this settings PERMANENT., i have several options: Overwrite, Save as (= duplicate+++, below the original), Save as in category....  save as VARIATION (later more)
As said before: A context-right for brush-tools would be great. Here could also be the entry "open further settings". This will popup  the brsuh-setting-panel  from above, but directly here. And this panel gets automatically closed if the mouse get outside the panel. EXCEPT: i hit the button: Stay in front, or so. Otherwise its a one or maybe 3 edit window, as long visible as the mouse is inside.
As said before, all settings here are just temporally, if i change the brush, all is forgotten, except i EXPLICIT save as/overwrite...
    4. Do we need so much brushes? The Power of VARIATIONS!
What is a brush? Except the standard ones, a brush is just a HOLDER of a single- or several images... with special settings, how to repeat this images. I would say all "brushes" which use the same image(s) are one brush, but different variotions. Well the settings can be so extrem different, i would not say its a family, even if the definition above is valid. But for lot of brushes we could put them together as just "variation". Grunge-Edgy-brushes for example. We need this brushes as top, left, above, right... edges in maybe different sizes... Or texture brushes with the same images in different sizes/rotations/opacity/flow...This will grow up our librarys, lot of SAME brushes will appear as single-ones. With VARIATIONS that would be much more easy, faster, smarter...
If i right-click of on a VARITION-brush i get all its "Variations" (size, rotation, flow, opacity... dynamics... and combinings)... as one-click-selection! This would, save lot of same brsuhes with just different soizes...rotations... organize all brushes in a significant better, very fast and really smart way. A piano-sound keeps a piano sound, even with different play-wise and lot of FX. Well, if i do a lot work, it maybe can sound like a contrabass... but why not use the contrabass as first element???? And if my piano-fx sounds like a saxophon... i will take this sample as new "parent" for new variations... The "family-idea" keeps under all circumtances the same.
And yeah, normaly 0-1 sets the opacity for a brush... if i option, why not use this numbers instead for my dedicated, more precise VARIATIONS???? (i can use normal behavior or say: for this BRUSH use the fisrt 10 variations...)
    5. Creating new brushes/behaviors/dynamics...
Why can i not rightclick a layer and say "create new brush from it"?  This longwindow via save and search in the brush dialog... ist sooooo unsmart!
Why not "repeating" part of the image but in front and end there will be take other parts of the images, like an audio- sample, its repeats just only the "middle" but will fade in/out...
Why not using special-keys for special dynamics? With shift all dynamics will pressured and with command all dynamics will multiply by 2..... or control will change the size, even if sizedynamic = zero.... and so on...
    6. Presets
Well ALL of the AP-Preset-SystemS (yes plural) in AP lacks of lot things. Some are rename, but not moveable, some one  can organzied inside a category, but the categorys not moved... and so on... It seems, dozens of single-people, without any ideas of concept and "anticipate user wishes; unslave them from lot of long-windowed" could try their luck! ALL this systems are inconsistent, each other, and long-windowed and i would say Semi-semi-semi-professionell. My 7 years old daughter would this better "concept", cause she knows, its better to have ALL colored pencils in separate boxes , not in the whole flat, room, garden... AND she knows sometimes its better to reorganize ALL pencils to project-ones... But even than, after each projekt, she is going back to her normally order... she likes most lexibility WITH basic-structure and she is very, very lazy... maybe thats the reason, she does not like to do things twice or long-windowed, or over-complicated... she is FLEXIBLE-PRAGMATIC, before doing anything, lets get an overview... is this the best way? who says???? what would be, if...!!!

Alice S reacted to DM1 in Affinity Designer 1.9.1 iPad Help File PDF
Hi fellow Affinity users.  Having been confined to the house during the Covid pandemic I have taken the opportunity to update the Designer PDF help file to version 1.9  There have been numerous feature additions in this version so you may benefit from updating.  I hope you find it useful.
I have attached a lower resolution copy of the PDF version of the Affinity Designer IPad apps built in Help file directly to this post. See below. (I have also attached a less compressed (higher resolution) copy's Dropbox “link” to a PDF version).
You can open the PDF file in a reader or iBook allowing you to view and search the help file while working on a document in Affinity Designer. All links within the document should be working.
I hope you find it as useful as I do.
Please note that this PDF is not in any way supported by Affinity, nor are they responsible for any errors or omissions,  so please do not refer any errors or omissions in the Document to Affinity. Every attempt has been made (by me) to ensure the content is an accurate representation of the built in Help file, however some errors 'may' have slipped through .
I will  endeavour to keep it up to date (at least for a little while) . When Publisher comes out I may redo the layout (Pages is a little limited in the area of indexing).
My Dropbox account is basic and limits daily bandwidth, if you experience a problem downloading just try again next day.

Alice S reacted to toltec in Context toolbar options?
    Move Tool
    General controls

Top Left: Reset Rotation Box. If you rotate an object, this resets the selection box to the page.
Top Right: Set Rotation Target. Rotate around a different place other than the image centre.
Bottom left: Lock Children. Locks the image inside the shape, etc.
Bottom Right: Hide Selection Box while dragging. Hides the box so you can see what you are doing when aligning.

    Node Tool (and Pen Tool)
These control snapping of nodes as you draw.

Top Left: Align to nodes of selected curves
Top Right: Snap to geometry of selected curves (currently selected)
    Bottom left: Snap off-curve handles
Bottom Right: Snap all selected nodes when dragging
Align to nodes of selected curves
Snaps the node to another node on the path or shape and applies to drawing or editing (Node Tool). As the node aligns, Designer displays red horizonal and green vertical alignment guides.
Snap to geometry of selected curves
Snaps nodes to a path outline or nodes, indicated by a yellow node appearing over the path. If you are using the Node Tool, select another path and it will snap to that. A yellow node and outer line will appear.
    Snap off-curve handles
Move a node handle with the Node Tool and this will align the node handle to the next (adjacent) node on the path. The handle will turn purple when it is aligned, and a purple line displayed between the handle and node.
Snap all selected nodes when dragging
With the Node Tool selected, if you select multiple nodes by dragging a marquee around them and move the selected nodes together, this option causes all the selected nodes to snap. Otherwise, although all the selected nodes will move, only the node you drag will snap.

Alice S reacted to JMWL in Context toolbar options?
    Hi -
Im new to affinity designer (used to illustrator on the desktop), so just getting to grips with how it works. I can’t find any information, including in the tutorials, about the context menu toolbars for the various vector tools (specifically the move and node tools). There is a grid of four symbols on the right hand side of the context toolbar for each of these that don’t have a name or any explanation, can anyone help me with these? I’ve got a feeling they’ll help with precision when drawing and working with vector shapes, but can’t seem to work out what most of them mean??? I’ve worked out that one of them moves the centre point of the shape.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Alice S reacted to MEB in Expand stroke trouble
    Hi Michelle W,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
If your stroke/line is based on a brush that uses a raster texture it can't be converted/expanded to a shape - which is probably what you were trying to do. Only the brushes from the Basic category and some from the Assorted category (the ones that don't use raster textures/are pure vector based) can be expanded to a shapes.

Alice S reacted to StevenS in Linking iPad app purchase to Affinity account?
    Hi @Alice Saurus,
    Welcome to the Affinity forum.
You do not need to worry about it. All updates for our iPad apps are issued through the App Store.
As Apple and ourselves do not share any customer data, App Store purchases do not appear with Affinity Store accounts.

I've been lurking on this forum for years now, and i've noticed the developers are very responsive to customer input. I wouldn't post here if they just ignored everybody like Adobe. Just remember they are actively developing the third part of the Affinity Trinity (publisher) and that is probably taking much of their manpower to get that application ready for launch.
The affinity apps are only in the 1.xx version range, the amount of polish and  the nearly complete feature set in such an early release of a full design suite is amazing. I find it's worth being patient. I'm confident they will iron out the quirks eventually.

It is always helpful to be able to see what a poster is doing, so it’s a good idea to turn on screen recording and in Affinity turn on Show touches in Settings. That way people can see what you are trying to do and whether you are doing it correctly.
If you’re not sure how to record screen check this out

Alice S reacted to JustARalf in Guides and Rulers. Gasp.
According to a reply to a post titled „Rulers scale on AP for iPad“ there are as of now no rulers in Affinity Photo for iPad. In itself this is somewhat surprising considering that rulers are a rather basic design tool. I‘ve started searching for rulers because I actually wanted to add a vertical guide to the second of two artboards. Yes, I know: Document menu > Guides - but here‘s the thing: if you‘re working with more than one artboard the vertical guide will initially appear (at least that was the case for me) to the left of the artboard, the Position dialogue will read 0 mm (or px, pt...). Changing that number to the desired value however will move the guide to that position, say 30 mm, alright - but in the first artboard. Basically you have add to the hypothetical 30 mm the position of the active artboard relative to the first one and once that‘s done, the number in the dialogue will magically change to 30 mm with the guide in the artboard in question. Did I, once again, miss the magic (or obvious) trick or is this somewhat tedious procedure the only way position guides? Are there rulers after all? Is my logic totally skewed because I have been spoiled by working with this other company`s products for twenty years?

Alice S reacted to JustARalf in Basic things: units, rulers, guides.
I am not sure if this is the right place for my post. I started doing design work with Photoshop and Freehand and later, when Adobe first bought and subsequently killed Freehand, with Illustrator. A few months ago I played around with Designer and Photo on both, an iMac and an iPad, and liked the experience. Most of all I liked that finally someone tried to come up with an alternative to Adobe. Sadly, since I decided to try and do a real paying design job on an iPad Pro using Designer and Photo my experience has been quite frustrating. Rather than doing actual design I had to search forums for the most basic (in my opion) features. Changing units from pt to mm? “Resize” in my opinion is a quite unlikely spot. Want pagerulers? No, this feature hasn’t made its way to the iPad yet. I am aware that I am surely stuck in the Adobe logic of where I expect to find certain functions and tools and how I expect them to operate but I am most certainly not the only one. As things stand right now with every step I want to make design wise I have to expect it to either not work or only after a considerable amount of time in the forums, this, simply, isn’t an option and step by step it takes me closer to goodbye Affinity and a sad hello Illustrator.
In terms of actually asking something:
    - Rulers: really (really?) still not implemented in both iPad apps?
    - Guides: is there way to add guides to a specific artboard at a desired position without mathematical shenanigans? How can I edit and remove specific guides?
