    I agree being able to collapse all layers and groups would be a useful feature. However I think it would get annoying if layers were popping opened and closed as you are selecting things.

    I usually disable the "Show Selection in Layers Panel" option in the User Interface section under Preferences when I don't want to deal with many many layers and groups in the layer panel.
    If I then want to find a selected object I can just right click and "Find in Layers Panel"

    Do views not already do this? You can make a new view window and use it as you would your regular view, zoom to whatever level etc, while working close up on your main view.

    Patrick C got a reaction from Dan Risse in Any way to allow slices with same name to only export once?
    Hi,

    I create UI for work and we often have reusable elements in our designs; when these are exported they have the same name but different X Y coordinates on the page. I'd like to start using Affinity for this but there is a slight issue.

    Currently when Affinity exports two Slices with the same name, it adds a number to the file name of the repeat slices. Is there a way to disable/override this? My goal is to have only one of the repeat slices exported but still have the coordinates for each in the Batch Builder export.

    Also it would be great to have some more advanced control on the Batch Builder presets in future hehe

    Don't understand why when they implemented the Batch Builder function that they didn't have any option for custom settings.

    I'd rather have a halftone tool that creates vector based halftones based on preset parameters and a drawn shape, versus a filter. I'm into microstock, so files need to be super basic, filters never export in a usable way when you're uploading files to Adobe Stock or Shutterstock.

    I know I'm rather verbose, and could probably say as much with less than half of the walls of text I output here every now and then, but I try my best. I really want Affinity to be as close to perfect for everybody as possible. And I'm glad you're all paying attention to that.
    Anyway, keep the suggestions coming. I'm sure we'll all get at a workable solution.

    Patrick C reacted to JGD in Allow objects to snap to their “ghost”, initial position during drag operations
    Hi again. This is a rehash of yet another feature request I made more than four years ago, which is still preventing me from working in Affinity Designer in a sensible fashion.
    As you know, Ai implements drag operations in an '80s/'90s style “ghost” drag model (not unlike the Classic Mac OS window and icon drag model). The WYSIWYG part of the equation is the original position of the object, while the new position will be shown as a “ghost”, i.e. an outline, which you can snap to the original position of the object. This behaviour, while not being completely WYSIWYG or very elegant, is VERY useful, especially – but not limited to – when doing modular typography.
    Affinity Designer, on the other hand, features a completely WYSIWYG drag mode, in which no “ghosts” exist. You just can't snap an object to its initial position, period. This is suboptimal, and forces the user to use impractical workarounds, such as duplicating objects instead, or to rely on complex grid arrangements, which may be overkill for simpler projects.
    [For some context, InDesign features both Illustrator's drag model, when you perform a quick click+drag operation, and Affinity Designer's model, when you perform a longer, click+hold+drag operation.]
    My suggestions (either a single one of them or a combination thereof) as to how this problem can be solved are the following:
    • Add a toggle in preferences so a different drag model can be used instead of the current strictly WYSIWYG one;
    • Allow users to perform a different drag model, perhaps like in InDesign, by holding the position after clicking and before dragging, but reversed (the preferred default model should still be a selectable option, as above);
    • Allow users to use the Command+Drag operation to temporarily activate a ghost of the initial position (currently, this shortcut duplicates the object, which makes zero sense as the Option+Drag shortcut already does this and there's no need for two redundant shortcuts for the same operation).
    As before, if you want me to make a little demonstration video of the intended behaviour, I'm more than happy to do so.

    I've made a few of these in AD.
    They're not really for any purpose other than looking cool. My original idea was about illustrating time. Using a convoluted method, I convert a date/time into numbers that I use to construct the shape , which also defines its colors.

    Patrick C reacted to evtonic3 in Repeat Gradient Effect
    In the Layer styles panel, I would find it very useful to make a gradient repeat itself when applied to something. For example If I have an assortment of colors that are applied to text, if it repeated the gradient I don't have to create an endless pattern of the same colors. With a repeat option it would apply the already set up gradient and repeat it across the span of the entire text object.

    Patrick C reacted to MattP in Symbols in SVG code?
    As you've noted, symbols are not exported as symbols to SVG yet - this will be implemented in the future :)

    Our symbols allow for individual elements within the symbol to be modified without updating all instances, so it's not quite as simple as saying 'that's a symbol, reuse the existing symbol' as they need to check all attributes of all objects they contain to check they would be identical to a master instance - and as they don't currently do that, we can't risk outputting them as symbols to SVG. We will implement this though...

    Thanks,

    Patrick C reacted to qendl in Rasterize layer while preserving colors created by blending with lower layers?
    I figured out an easy way. You can merge visible, getting the shape with the right colors and the background as an image. Then you can take the original shape, use the "color overlay" effect to turn it solid black, rasterize that, and use that as a mask on the merge visible image. Thanks for the replies Bri-toon.
